MAY MINGLE

May Mingle: Entombed City
Welcome to Teyvat - a vast magical world of adventure.
Everyone's hard work resulted in the gate to upper Dragonspine opening. These ruins have not been traversed in years, if not centuries - everything within has been lost to time and living memory. An entire city has been buried in the snow.

Traces of technology can be found in the city - golden boxes that contain crystals capable of recording and playing back holograms. One of the boxes introduces this place as Vindagnyr; a land once full of greenery and life. Just what happened to these people? What caused the eternal winter?

The city's inhabitants worshipped Celestia. Why then were they left to die?
State of the World
On October 1st, the entombed city of Vindagnyr becomes open for exploration. Travelers can choose to look for clues or try to scavenge the city for ancient materials or tools. Recording boxes all around the city tell stories of Vindagnyr's greener past, and of the days when winter suddenly arrived. This is the cruelty of Celestia that Forneus wished you to see.
For all questions regarding May's mingle and events, please head over to our OOC post.

[If there's one thing to be said about Dragonspine, it's that it's cold. So, once people are done gawking in horror at the Entombed City, they might be drawn to the sight of a little campfire a bit away from the city gates. If they go close, they'll find one (1) Rean Schwarzer, sitting on a log nearby it and just... staring.
He looks pretty shaken. No big surprise there, given what he's nearby. But he's also 1) alone, which is maybe not great in the frozen mountains, and 2) not paying enough attention to notice that someone's come into his camp.
So, uh... none of this is great. What do?]
II: doing the world's worst commission, no, seriously, ham is not easy to acquire
[It's been a bit and the initial sick has at least faded slightly, so Rean can be found around the base of the mountain. It looks like he's bent over some kind of box. There's a sign nearby:
This is an emergency supply point. If you should need anything, you may help yourself to the materials here.
Dragonspine is a dangerous place. Please do not go too far in.
If anyone gets closer, they'll find that Rean's stocking the box with some supplies. It's hard to see what's in it, but he's currently wrapping up some ham he's pulled out of his bag to stock the box. And it's only when he turns back toward the box that he sees whoever's creeped up on him, and he jumps a little.]
Woah—! Ah... sorry, I didn't hear your footsteps over the wind.
Do you need something? I've got supplies if you've run low.
III: wildcard
[I'm bad at ideas but if you have one just throw me a starter and we'll get this party started!]
oh god no why - that's the name of the prompt
[What hits her first, though, is the need for survival. They're not in current danger, as far as she could tell, save for the cold. And the worst thing to do in the cold is to sit still. Hence her worry for Rean.]
I understand what must be going through your head, but it's important to keep moving. We need to be careful the same doesn't happen to us.

As it turns out, Rean does not cope well with death. He's been through a lot himself, for sure, but with one (very painful) exception, he's never had to get up close and personal with the bodies before.
Once he's managed to pull himself back together enough to know what's going on, he looks away again.]
...I have a fire. [It's a weak excuse, and he knows it. This little campfire certainly won't be enough to keep him alive through the night.] I'll be okay for a few more minutes, at least.
[He's quiet for a moment longer.]
...You told me, back at that bar, that you'd seen some pretty awful things. [Or at least Rean assumes she has. No one kills a god for no reason.] So how? How do we just keep moving after this?

[Even if you are asking her the hard questions. The more she thinks about it, the more this scene reminds her of returning to the Waking Sands. The day she found all of her friends murdered. How did she get past it then?]
I have. Enough so that this scene feels almost familiar.
[It's clear that some care has been taken in treating the bodies with respect. That much is good, at least.]
But to tell you the truth, I'm not sure. The first time it happened, I was to stunned to register anything. I was too afraid.
no subject
...heh. [There is, of course, zero mirth to that.] I guess it's to be expected.
I've seen things sort of like this, too, but... never with the bodies just still here. It was either completely empty, or there were still people alive to pick up the pieces.
But even then... I've never known how to react, either. I just keep stumbling forward until I'm given a goal to grasp.
[...]
I guess he's given us one. Forneus, I mean. Overthrowing them. And... it's not that I don't want to. I can't condone what we've just seen. But...
They're so much bigger than us. I don't even know where to begin.
I
Though she blinks at the sight of the fire, quietly approaching and realizing Rean isn't really paying attention. She watches him for a moment, before sighing heavily and speaking up.]
Lowering your guard like that isn't a good idea.
no subject
Oh. Oh, it's just another traveler. He takes a deep breath and lets it out slowly before responding.]
...Sorry.
Yeah, you're right. I just... I can't think straight, and if I try navigating like this I'm bound to wind up in worse trouble than if I just stay still.

[For both of their benefits, really. Something like what they saw... It's a lot to take in. Not even she's entirely unaffected.
So with her deciding that, she steps a bit closer and flicks a small flame into the campfire, bolstering it.]
Besides, having someone with a Pyro Vision around right now won't hurt.
no subject
...Ha, that's for sure. I'm kind of useless up here myself. [With a twitch of something that almost might be considered a tired half-smile, he pulls out his own Cryo Vision to hold it up before tucking it back away.]
...I can drag another log over here for you to use as a seat, if you'd like. There's a couple just back there.
[He motions over his shoulder, and in fact there are some logs a safe, visible distance away. No worrying about this idiot getting lost in the snow again.]
Least I can do for you keeping me company.
I.
Rean...
[He won't ask before sitting down on the log next to him, best friend privileges and all that. Nor does he try to dance around the subject with pleasantries when they both know what's on their minds]
It's really bad up there, huh.
[That sounds like a ridiculous understatement even to him, but you know what? He's pretty sure anything would sound like an understatement.]
no subject
...Yeah.
[His voice cracks, and he doesn't even try to hide it. There's no reason to. After all, he knows Elliot is suffering the same way he is right now, and there's no fear of judgement.]
...I never wanted to see anything like this again. It's like the worst of Celdic and Hamel...
no subject
Yeah...it really is. I kept thinking of those places.
[Celdic rebuilt itself, but even when he visited the town these days- his mind could never fully shake the aftermath of that attack, the raw grief and despair that hung in the air. And as for Hamel...well, it'd never have a chance to rebuild. Just like this place]
I found some recordings. It sounds like they didn't even fully understand why it was happening. They knew Celestia wasn't listening anymore, but they really thought they could win back their approval.
[With prayers and murals, from the sound of it. They'd been so sure they could win their gods approval again, they didn't try to find another way to survive. They just pleaded to uncaring gods until they froze.]
no subject
...I don't understand it. Why didn't they just try to communicate with the people? They clearly still loved their gods. They were still trying to worship them. Whatever they were doing that was so wrong, they would have just stopped if they got sent a divine message that... you know... made sense...
[His voice breaks completely on that last word, because none of this makes sense. This is sickening, this is awful, and he's not sure when he's going to be able to sleep again.]
no subject
...I don't know, I really don't. [he shakes his head, knowing it's a stupid answer]
It...It reminds me how Duke Albarea would treat the people of Celdic. How little he cared about them and wouldn't listen to Otto's pleads. But...
I always thought gods were supposed to be better than that.
ii.
[ it's just the friendly neighborhood doctor looking over what rean's doing with an assured smile. ]
You sure are prepared for anything, Rean. What else did you put in these boxes?
no subject
[As for what's in there, he shifts to the side so Figaro can get a look. It's just some basic survival equipment and some food that will last a while.] Mmm... it's just some stuff to keep anyone who might wander out here going until help arrives. This place is really too dangerous for people to be wandering around in.
...Probably including us, but here we are.
